An unmistakable hornbill, some 80 cm in length with very black and white plumage. It has large, flamboyant crown feathers that can be raised in a forward pointing crest and just a small low casque ridge. The white crowned is an unobtrusive bird that keeps below the canopy level and is usually seen in small groups flying across forest gaps. Its call is a mellow double or triple cooing and it eats a large proportion of animal food including insects, snakes, lizards as well as fruits. It has typical hornbill range, from Myanmar, S. Thailand, Malaysia and Borneo but it is rare in Thailand and Malaysia and though a population has recently been discovered in Cambodia this is threatened by increasing development, logging and deforestation. Its status is 'near-threatened'. Painting size: 76 x 61 cm
