TICKELL'S BROWN HORNBILL
It was love at first sight! I came across a bird in a cage in a Government research centre near the Bang Pra Non-Hunting Area. There is just something about these birds. I saw my first in the wild in a magnificent tree in Kaeng Krachan National Park …. and I was still in love! Brown Hornbills are medium sized (65cm), rich rust brown below, darker brown above with a pale yellow bill and low casque ridge. Its call is a loud plaintive and repeated whey-wheyo and it just occurs in Thailand and South Myanmar though the closely related Austen's Brown Hornbill has a wider distribution to the North. Tickell's has the smallest range of any hornbill and is considered 'near-threatened' due to habitat loss from logging and agriculture. It favours the tallest primary forests from foothill level up to 1500 feet and it is a co-operative breeder – a pair may have up to 5 male attendants that help in feeding the walled up breeding female and her chicks. Painting size: 46 x 66 cm
