On a Whim

An impressionist view on Zierikzee where I went for the first time. Years ago in a railway station I bought 10 secrets for a happy life by the Dalai Lama. One secret I found very appealing, the others were all too obvious to me. This secret is to regularly visit a place you have never been before. So it came to be that once in a while I poke my finger on a map randomly. Mostly on a Sunday morning because that is when I feel at rest after a hard week’s work. In my days as an artist I live a regular and steady life. Hence, travelling to an unknown place on a whim is an exciting thrill for a change. Perhaps in this particular case I already heared that Zierikzee is a fun cosy place to be. Anyway, time to check it out.

A Natural Landmark

Once arrived I was charmed by this fun little town. It has many small back streets filled with old buildings oozing out a medieval atmosphere. Zeeland is known for its mysterious silverish light caused by the sun reflected by the sea surrounding the islands. Such is visible in the harbour of Zierikzee and that is where I went eventually. The Zuidhavenpoort marks the beginning of the harbour area with its fairway to open waters beyond. Evidently it serves as a natural landmark of the town and I was bound to draw it. I wanted to capture the atmospheric depth while on the other hand I did not want to capture a lot of detalis. The trees for example I rendered only slightly while the stress is put on the water reflections. Instead of a previous graphite pencil drawing of Maassluis I skipped the roundism style this time.
