Last year I was walking through sunny Voorschoten, a town in the north to where I live. I saw an attractive cityscape appear in one of the streets in the centre. Because I did not had any drawing materials with me I took a photo. The decision to do this one came much later though. It often happens that I browse through my pictures much later, only to recognize this beautiful scenery then. However, I did not know how to execute it in graphite pencil at the very start. Somehow it became a crazy mix of different styles.
The trees and the top part of the drawing directed me towards my personal style roundism. In many of my motifs I constantly look for contrasts. Straightness in buildings and road patterns can lead to monotomy quickly and thus to boredom. The treescape in the upper left part therefor was a gift I exploited to the max. Since a tree in the front can appear blurry when the focus lies farther it lended itself for abstraction perfectly. Last but not least, I let the round lower church rooftop echo in the round shapes of the leaves. That is a trick I often have pulled, for example in my graphite pencil drawing Gouda – 30-06-17.
The middle section I rendered realistically. There I saw room for exploiting the sunny lighting on rooftops and rabbets. In the first place it is the light who is the leading lady in all my art works. Next to this I quickly found out that the enclosed pockets of cubic lights created necessary rhythyms. They counterbalance the upper round shapes as said.
Litteral depictions of cityscapes I sometimes find such a drag. What a medioctre little town such as Voorschoten could use is some excitement. And so the lower part became a different story. Ashes to ashes!
