The Peace Palace

Just outside the centre of The Hague (Den Haag) on the road to Scheveningen at the coast The Peace Palace is situated. It houses the The International Court of Justice of the United Nations. It is an impressive building and I had the privilige of visiting it a couple of times. I went there for business and pleasure quite some times, as a student and later as a lawyer. A little secret is that I even made love there once to my former girfriend in the past. It is one of those few landmarks that is typical for The Hague. At least it certainly ifor me. The city lacks a clear and sound cityscape but perhaps this comes close. After all, The Hague wants to brand itself as a capital of international justice for ages now.

Museum Mesdag

At the Laan van Meerdervoort there is this Museum Mesdag. At the first and second floor in the back you can look straight into the garden. There is this lovely view on The Peace Palace farther away. For years I wanted to sketch this view but I always forget about it. Maybe I will take my pencils and go there once more. From the Carnegieplein there was a vantage point as well, even though I had to look through the fence. So I took pictures like I am used to, biking through The Hague.

Type of Rendering

The reference picture I used I took last year at the brink of spring. Since this (today - 4nd February 2019) was a particularly windy and cold day I used this motif in order to evoke spring I guess. I kept the building quite vague. I also sketched with a rough edge more that I am used to in previous drawings. Maybe it is more suited to work it towards a more impressionistic look than a cubistic or roundish one. Some parts in the foreground show my initial roundism intentions though. It looks a bit like the style employed in my drawing Leidschendam 11-04-19.
