Variation in Pastel

A pastel variety on a previous graphite pencil drawing 'Roundism - 02-05-17' in which I tried to match the found styled forms to a colour scheme that would match them. It was a hell of a job to balance them all. With regard to the forms can I say that I did not want to change much compared to the drawing. I liked them already how I made them the first time.

Tonal Rhythym

Key features in this drawing are darker plains in corners of cross sections so the darker tonal intervals become a rhythym people use to see and enjoy the structure of the depiction. Without these patches the pastel would have become weak. To add things up: there is a nice balance in light, mid and dark tonal regions that support the color violence. In my eyes employing color should always follow tonality and is only supportive to the latter. Surely a prestudy like a graphite pencil drawing is useful indeed.

Saturation

It is not the first time I employed the theory of divisionism in a pastel. As the model is of indian descendance, her brown and yellow skin hues lend themselves extremely well to place orange, green and blue pastel hatched strokes next to eachother in order to get that renowned greying or tanning effect it induces. However, that is not what I did primarity. I experimented with bigger plains of blue and orange looking ocres placed ajacent to eachother, interlocking themselves almost. As a result the effect is the same. Consequently does the spectator have to step back a bit further to remark this effect. From up close the pastel shatters in miniature plains of abstract quality.
