(Variation 1 on the Same Theme)
A Style to Call My Own
After the last graphite pencil drawing I realized something was missing, not the nude of course. That style was realistic or impressionistic, something I am skilled at for a long time now. Consequently I started ‘The Birth of New Cubism Series’ in 2014 in order to break through old habits of rendering. The ‘missing’ part was a style to call my own. I once read artists like Degas were frustrated by this kind of search. It is no fun when you do not stand out in the crowd and people call you the new Dali or new Hopper. Evidently they are keen to compare your latest work to whatever famous artist pop up in their minds.
Cathedral of Rouen Firestarter
Maybe it was while telling students about the Cathedral of Rouen Series by Monet I thought of a solution. Using a single motif consecutively for many times, composition, proportions and anatomy will not be a challenge to face anymore. What may come is a provocation to alter ‘the how’ of the rendering. Another tool is to see one thing in another. To me that is the key to surrealism: associating one form with another. That another thing also can be abstraction or a combination.
Mark 1
Anyway, this series is show many varieties and styles on the same theme. This one is 'mark 1' and I served as the reference image for many to come this year and next. It is in a rather impressionist style, executed in my hatched strokes technique.
