As part of the Out of Egypt series I did the theme ‘Bastet’ early this year. This one I started some days ago when all of a sudden I saw a cat in the model’s lap. Therefor I thought that to be a great start to discover some more and do another Bastet variation. It is World Animal Day anyway and I miss my cat Furia. She sat for me as a model a couple of times and I thought I’d honour her today as well. Although I miss her much I don’t think I take a new one on short notice. Such is also prompted by the fact that my studio where I live is rather small. Maybe it is a sad thing for a cat to live on 85 square meters, 8 stories high. Not really the environment that brings out the best in the animal.
The cat in the lap can be considered as pareidolia or even as an ambiguous image. I explained the principle thereof already in the description to my oil painting ‘Gaia – 16-03-16 (sold)’. Remarkably the noun pussy, pussycat or kitty defining the animal also bears this ambiguous other meaning. Would the old Egyptians have used a similar noun? In total I discovered 5 cats. However, the one in the hip is the posture of Furia as used in my graphite pencil drawing of 2016.
A modern touch came late in the game. By sheer freak accident I stumbled upon animals taking selfies. There where deer captured by wildlife cameras but also pets accidentally pressing the photo button on a smartphone. Consequently I thought it would be fun to throw an arm in holding my iPhone. Enter cat number 6 and the model’s face I turned into number 7. Done!
