Surreal Again

The next drawing in the series ‘The Venus of The Hague’. The last drawing was very cubistic so I could only make a u-turn back to more figuration. The drawing before that one was surrealistic and I felt I had to return to surrealism once again. So it happened I saw a documentary about the great white shark at the same time. It messed with my head.

Imagine a Fish

Being a deep sea fish a coelacanth hardly ever come face to face with a white shark way up high but sometimes it does. If so, what would you expect to happen. A greeting or a face off? It is one of those mysteries that lies under the sea. Who can tell what may come next? But wait a minute. I honestly lied it together as one piece, so it must be true!

Something Was Missing

In the later stage of the drawing I felt something was missing. The upper left corner felt empty and I browsed through my database in my head. I remembered my oil ‘Wet Dream (2009)’ that shows some light shimmering through the waves. I used this effect but made it a little bit stronger. This way the sunlit side on the white shark made sense. It also causes to distract the attention of the brain coral that is all too surrealist in itself already.
