One Thing in Another

Now there is this girl Lorelei that all of a sudden came into my life. Let me explain how. I always tell my students that art is about seeing one thing in another. It is just like tasting wine. One tends to describe or compare it to something completely different than the wine itself. These comparisons can be chocolate, red fruit, etc. As to this Shakespeare did not much different by writing: “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day”. After quite some years of drawing everyday I now can say that I am able to see beyond every image. In many occasions I can dissociate myself from what it should represent and see other forms, alike ore completely different. Perhaps this is were artistic flowers grow.

Siren

When I saw this model, I saw her sitting on a sea bed with waving hair. Together with my esteemed colleague Mirjam of Studio Brugman I fantasized about mermaids and sirens. Hence it is named after the famous siren ‘Lorelei’. One thing leads to and in another. Sirens like these are mysterious by nature. Surely her face would not have to be very clear, a bit ambiguous maybe. The same goes for her fish tail. I kept it rather sketchy and this way it resembles the waves in the background somehow. Her left arm I also kept a bit ‘misty’. That is how it is under water. There a sailor cannot get hold on beautiful women under water very clearly. Personally I like the contrasts between vague and sharp objects in this one the most. On the same principles I vested my earlier graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 08-05-18’.
