Some time ago I went to Leiden for art supplies. There is this lovely old shop TOWI in the Morsstraat I like to visit once in a while. It oozes out the scent of eras gone by, just like Leiden itself. Both a bit squidgy around the edges, stretched up by time too much. Wouldn’t you love that? Besides this the city is full of memories. When in Leiden I can see myself walking around as a young buck on every street corner. They are hardly memories of art though, because I studied international law there in the 1980s and 1990s. That seems a very long time ago now. I feel like doing art fulltime for ages already. I drew the city a couple of times before, the last one being my graphite pencil drawing ‘Leiden – 27-12-16 (sold)’. Time to do some more.
When I was walking across the Morspoort Bridge, entering Leiden I saw this incredible group of clouds. They were next to Mill ‘De Put’ at the river Rijn towards the Weddesteeg across the water. That is where Rembrandt was born. Since we both are artists and have been living in Leiden, I decided to honor him with a clairobscur drawing. Although impressionistic or realistic of nature it has turned out more surreal than thought. Speaking of water, there is plenty of it by means of all the canals. That is typical of the place, charming for tourists and a goldmine for artists. Personally I like water included landscapes the best. It is rewarding to capture all the tonal shifts that make up for it. Automatically it gives added value to the work and that bit of mysty. Who may know what lurks below the surface.
